In terms of its function, the plug valve is primarily used for flow isolation. This means it is mainly designed to stop or allow the flow of fluids in pipelines. When the plug's port aligns with the flow path of the pipeline, the fluid can pass through the valve, but when the plug is rotated to block the port, the flow is shut off completely. Although plug valves are commonly used for on/off flow control, they can also be used for throttling, which means adjusting the valve to allow a partial flow of fluid, depending on the needs of the system. This feature is particularly useful when precise control over the flow rate is required, although plug valves are not typically considered the best for fine flow regulation.
